We have $7,000 in credit card debt to go (we've paid off $5,000 in the last year), plus my student loans, until we are debt-free (not counting the house, of course). My biggest worry right now is our lack of retirement funds/planning...so that will definitely need to be our savings focus (as well as adding to our emergency fund) once the debt is finally gone. Plus we have two small children we need to start college savings plans for! Of course, it will also be wonderful to take a vacation here and there (we've taken one trip besides our honeymoon in the 6 years we've been married!) without feeling guilty! It is difficult sometimes to keep our heads up and stay motivated....but the bigger picture of our future is so important to both of us.

Looking forward to reading the book....thanks!
Good luck with everything! I know how you feel about always feeling guilty when you have debt hanging over you. Debt Guilt, I used to call it.

    Thanks for sharing!

Debt free dream. Well, ours is two fold. We have been working hard for 3 years to pay down our debt and have roughly a year to go (which does not include our mortgage). My husband and I plan to have a sit down at the end of the year to strategize for our debt free future. We have already had one mini session and determined that we will work on our savings and also change to a 15 yr mortgage, when we accomplish "phase one". Phase two is simply save, save, save and pay off our mortgage. It also included the daily decisions of do we NEED this or just WANT this and does it fit into our plan, our goals. So, that is where we are right now. Lord willing we will achieve our goals and sleep sooooo much better at night and rejoice even more during the day :-)

Love your plan to switch over to 15-year mortgage. Even though rates are low, I still think paying it off is really a great move. And of course building up some savings.

Good luck and thanks for letting us be part of your life.

    My debt free dream

I'm looking to being debt free, aside from my mortgage, in Mid 2015 (or sooner). My dream is to be able to save faster for vacations and to be able to do things I enjoyed, but can't afford to do right now. I'd be spending more time with family and friends, instead of working two or three jobs. My primary job would allow me to have a comfortable income, save for retirement, and save in general. I could pick and choose extra work when it was available. I would be able to build my emergency savings and not have to worry about also covering minimum payments for my debt.

2015 is just around the corner--that's awesome. Keep it up! Start with the debt and lots of the other things fall in place. Over time I've realized that it really is possible to have the things that are important to you when you prioritize for them. I drive an old Honda, but it saves me $6K a year and I don't worry if it gets dirty from the beach or stinks from crab fishing, etc. That basically buys a vacation every year right there.

    Anyway, good luck to you.

    Debt story

We have about two more years before we're debt free, less if I'm successful in getting that second job and throwing in bonus payments along the way. Our debt (primarily credit card) built up because of our decisions re personal issues and then a failing business. So besides normal debt associated stress, the balance represents very stressful periods over the last several years. My debt-free dream is to walk outside after having made the last payment, and take a deep, deep breath of debt-free air! And after that? the freedom to save and invest and save some more! I am really looking forward to that day.
